John Kasich, Ohio governor, wants to start a program where parents fill out surveys of teachers as part of determining their pay. Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?Do you think it's a good idea to let parents determine teachers pay?
Do I get to determine how much my cashier gets paid? Do I get to determine how much my mechanic gets paid? Do I get to determine how much my doctor, nurse or dentist get paid? NO!!!! It would be offensive to these individuals to even suggest such a thing. So I have to ask when did teachers become lesser human beings in the eyes of politicians? Oh, that's right, when the teachers union supported their competition. Isn't the new democracy/dictatorship great?
Not at all. While there is no doubt that certain teachers are "better" than others, the profession as a whole falls apart if you start separating them like this. Not to mention that there is no way to ensure that parent surveys actually represent the ability of the teacher to teach. What if a teacher lives in their school's community and is neighbours/friends with many of the parents? What if a teacher gives students extra break time so that they go home and tell their parents how great their teachers are? What if a teacher starts giving out better grades without merit so parents will think that their students are doing better and will vote accordingly on the survey? What if a teacher has their own student in their class? Do the get to vote? If they don't, are they at a disadvantage because the number of potentially positive surveys is lowered by one? There are just so many problems with this.Do you think it's a good idea to let parents determine teachers pay?
It will reward bad teachers who have good personalities and are very friendly toward students and parents, and it will punish good teachers who may not be as liked, either because they have a less outgoing personality or because they hold their students to high standards. One thing is certain, if it passes, expect to see massive grade inflation, as every teacher bends over backward to please every student and parent. I would give every kid in my class an A, and call home to every parent telling them what a delight it is to have their kid in my class!
It depends, do we also get to fill out a survey to determine politician pay?Do you think it's a good idea to let parents determine teachers pay?
Absolutely not. That's not the job of the parent or student.
