Can I use Jag lawyers in the military to get lower child support payments, or get custody of my kid?

I am planning on joining the military soon. I was just wondering if this is possible. Can I use Jag lawyers in the military to get lower child support payments, or get custody of my kid?No, they will only defend you in court martial and other military cases.

They can help you file the paperwork to lower your child support payments, but they will not represent you to get custody of the child. And if you are going to be a single parent, you cannot be in the military- usually. There are exceptions, but it's rare.

However, JAG will not represent you in civil matters. They can advise you, but keep in mind they are not the experts in that field. They will typically refer you to someone local who is.Can I use Jag lawyers in the military to get lower child support payments, or get custody of my kid?JAG will not represent you in civil matters, Only Advise
Military lawyers are can not perform in this function. They advise only in civil law. no. JAG does not handle civil matters, only military ones.
No, the only thing the can do with family court orders is to address non-payment of child support. They cannot even address violation of court ordered visitation by a custodial parent in the military against a non-custodial in the military.

To learn what to do on either issue, go to Dads House in Yahoo Groups. There's an educational manual in the file section that can teach you what you need to know. Take the time to learn what you can and should do.

The JAG office cannot help you directly with this issue. They can offer advice about where to contact a lawyer with specialty in this matter. One issue not discussed is that once in the military 鈥?there are portions of the disciplinary code (UCMJ) that make you liable for debts. Meaning, if there is a dispute about your paying child support or some other payment on time or in full, your former spouse can contact your commanding officer informally and that could lead to a formal reprimand, withholding of wages, etc.

In general JAGs can help with certain civil legal matters like public notary and simple wills 鈥?such services are provided for free at pretty much every military base in every service.
