Is joining the military good for being an astronaut?

I think it would be really cool to be an astronaut. Most of the astronauts I've found have served in the military (here in Canada anyway). Why is this? Mission specialists need not be pilots, but many of them have also served in military roles. Becoming an astronaut is hard -- very difficult, and most applicants are not selected.

You want to be an officer that graduated from a military academy for your best chances of becoming an astronaut. As long as you're an Officer and not an enlisted person, you meet the basic qualifications necessary to go to space.
