Is joining the military good for being an astronaut?

I think it would be really cool to be an astronaut. Most of the astronauts I've found have served in the military (here in Canada anyway). Why is this? If I don't want to join the military is that going to make it hard for me to be an astronaut?Is joining the military good for being an astronaut?The training to operate jet aircraft is important if you are going to be an astronaut pilot. You want to be an officer that graduated from a military academy for your best chances of becoming an astronaut. As long as you're an Officer and not an enlisted person, you meet the basic qualifications necessary to go to space.
