How can someone support small government, yet support a large military?

Wouldn't the military be the method that a government would pretty much do whatever the f*ck it wanted...Im pretty sure Thomas Jefferson was afraid of large militaries and thats why he kept the navy small when he was president. Im not attacking anyone, but i want to know the reasoing behind this, cause i cant understand it....How can someone support small government, yet support a large military?Because I'm okay with having a military to defend our nation, but I'm not okay with a government big enough to tell me how to live my life every f****n step of the way.

I think the military could be smaller if we weren't busy meddling with other countries affairs. How can someone support small government, yet support a large military?
A large military ensures protection for the people. We people like that aren't crazy or inhumane, we want protection and we have common sense. People that want a smaller military must either be Osama Bin Laden or some overly-peaceful hippie with no reason.

And also, government and military are different. Just because wants more of one thing doesn't mean they can't want less of the other. How can someone support small government, yet support a large military?I think the thinking behind this roughly goes: "so that the government doesn't interfere in our lives - because that would of course limit freedom - but we still want to be able to go ravage and impeach upon the freedoms of all the smelly foreigners on camels". Such is right-wing American politics.
An excellent question that yanks the covers right off the GOP/Teabag/Fox 'News' Axis. The 'conservatives' pimp exclusively for any and all of the trans national corporations and one of the biggest of these is the entire 'national defense' mafia. A large well funded military requires a large well funded enemy....that would be China. But China's military budget is a fraction of ours...in fact, ours is five times bigger then the next dozen countries put together...including China. Someone is pulling the national leg....and picking the national pocket. Of course we're now still fighting the Bush Junta's War for Oil...for the benefit of Shell and Exxon. What...a war for oil? Say it ain't so! Of course that's not all. At this point almost everything worth owning, controlling or influencing is owned, controlled or influenced by a handful of trans national corporations and they got they way because they bought enough politicians to pass enough favorable legislation including tax breaks to put them in that position. Meanwhile these same weasels hand out Made in China flags to the morons who now believe that somehow the 'far left liberals' are going to make us all into socialists...thanks to the right wing radio dummies. Can you dig it...the 'liberals'...the inside enemy to go along with the Chinese 'outside enemy'...two back to back enemies they created. When it all falls apart the trans largest trans national corporations and the favored banks will be the 'last man standing'....and the American wage earner? Well, we'll still have those cheesy Made in China flags to wave. The reason? Power, prestige and authority...not to mention cash money. The world has changed...and nobody bothered to report it. Bummer for us!How can someone support small government, yet support a large military?Because small government is good, and so is a strong military?

Hello?

"Compared to social security or government run programs our military is faily small".

No, compared to the known universe our miltary is fairly small. How can someone support small government, yet support a large military?
Except the military is not obligated to do what the government says. The number one cause of regime change was by the military removing the government that had been in power.
Read the constitution. One of the few valid functions of the federal government is defending our borders, something the government fails to do constantly. Otherwise, they are overstepping and should not be doing all they are involved in.How can someone support small government, yet support a large military?
A large United States military is necessary to defend The United States of America against all of the thugs, murderers and Muslim Terrorists in the world

Have you forgotten September 11 2001 so soon?
by supporting a small government, yet supporting a large military!
Compare to social security or government run programs our military is faily small.
We need to re start the military draft and you will be #1.
You want a small military in these times? What a silly you are.
No, your premise is incorrect. See posse comitatus.
Survival
They just want a police state.

.
Well the military can do stuff abroad not at home. The military, at least in America today, does not do much domestically. If the government is small, the idea is that it should be cheaper and it should be easier for the public to monitor it...the military would therefore be under greater civilian control that way...so long as the government always represented the people's interests.

As far as the idea that the "government can do whatever they want"...I don't really get that. See...the whole people vs. government thing doesn't really make sense. We're a democracy. The government does only what they think the people want...ultimately. If there is a strong enough public sentiment behind an idea...all the politicians will go swarming in protecting it. Problems only start when politicians don't go for public interest and that only happens when there isn't monitoring of politicians.

And the idea that Thomas Jefferson was afraid of large militaries so that the government didn't do whatever they want doesn't make any sense. I mean...Jefferson WAS the government...was he afraid of himself??? I mean...if he was afraid of a military coupe that one thing (btw Shay's Rebellion might have made him get scared of military might...but that's irrelevant today)...but that's a totally different matter.

Other thing: This is slightly unrelated to your question/argument but I need to put this out there...This whole thing about doing exactly what the Founding Fathers did is kind of annoying. Like in the media there are always arguments over what they intended. Honestly...does it actually matter? The country has changed a lot since then. What matters is what the people of America want/need NOW. Not to mention the fact that the founding fathers weren't like one huge always agreeing blob. They had differing opinions. In fact, this age old battle over how big government/military should be has been going on ever since the Constitutional Convention. To use a founding father's argument for one side or another is nonsensical. I mean, they had less information and history to look upon to understand how political systems work. Democracy was an experiment they didn't know how it would turn out. The country was far more unstable. Rather than turn to them for our political theory...let's evaluate things for ourselves!
