I will answer the different parts, as I am not sure as to the specifics of the question.



1) Military members have various types of uniforms, ranging across several different needs of the uniforms. For instance, when working or in a battle field, members will wear an ODU or BDU (Operational/Battle Dress Uniform). That is the kind with camoflauge. Then there are dress uniforms for formal occasions such as working in an office, attending a wedding, etc. Officers will usually wear different types of "dressy" clothing compared to enlisted.



2) The ribbons you are talking about are for various accomplishments. You can get them for being a marksman on different firearms, for being praised for completing something, or being apart of a battle. For instance, during a time of war all members of the military will receive a National Defense Ribbon which is orange/red and yellow. Then the marksman ribbon is all black. If you are injured you will receive the Purple Heart and a purple ribbon to go along with it. There is a ribbon that was given out to members after 9/11, WWII, Operational Iraqi Freedom, etc.

Edit: Generals and highly decorated people you see like that have many ribbons for the above mentioned reasons, but they have a lot more because they've served in their respective branch for 25+ years.

Ribbons can be given for any number of things. th ribbons on the left are individual acheivements. the ones on the right are unit Awards. You have to earn individual awards. Even if you weren't born yet when your Battallion stormed Anzio, you get to wear the unit award. The Soldier's medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Acheivement Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal can be given for outstanding acts of heroism or sacrifice while in peace time or war, or for a whole career of good service. Medals like the medal of honor, distingiished silver star, bronze star are given for exceptional service in combat. Some medals denote service in general, or service in a particular war, theatre, or campaign. The Purple heart denoted a seroius wound.
